For six weeks this fall, Trinity preachers will be presenting Dismantling the false white gospel, a preaching series exploring Christian Nationalism. They’ll be drawing on Jim Wallis' latest book, The False White Gospel, which argues that Christian Nationalism does not reflect true Christian faith, but rather is intended to propagate systemic racism and white supremacy, and power for only a select few.
Here is the preaching lineup, and the scriptures that will be highlighted each week:
September 15 - The Rev. Elizabeth Molitors - Matthew 25:31-46 (“As you have done to the least of these, you have done to me.”)
September 22 - The Rev. Sarah Thomas - John 8:31-33 (“You will know the truth and the truth will make you free.”)
September 29 - The Rev. Anne Howard - Luke 10:25-37 (“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself… Who is my neighbor?”)
October 6 - The Rev. John Draper - Matthew 5:9 (“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.”)
October 13 - The Rev. Colleen Sterne - Galatians 3:28 (“There is no longer Jew or Gentile, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male or female, for all of you are one in Christ.”)
October 20 - The Rev. Mark Asman - Genesis 1:26 (“Then God said, Let us make humankind in our own image, according to our own likeness.”
Wallis identifies these six scriptural passages as being, “at the heart of what biblical faith means and what Jesus has called us to do.” He invites us to dig into these passages anew, and ask—challenge—ourselves: “Do we believe this and act accordingly, or not?”
